In 1969 Igor A. Shapovalov, a soloist of Perm Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after P.I.Tchaikovsky, People’s Artist of the USSR, founded the “Solnechnaya Raduga” choreographic ensemble composed of Perm Polytechnic Institute students.
Now the ensemble is headed by Lyubov Nikolaeva and Yuri Nikolaev.
The ensemble participated in numerous contests and festivals: the 11th and 12th International festivals in Havana (1978) and Moscow (1985), cultural events during the 20th Olympic Games (1980), the 18th and 19th Congresses of VLKSM (All-Union Leninist Young Communist League) (1978, 1982), and the 17th and 18th Trade Union Congresses (1982, 1988). “Solnechnaya Raduga” performed for the Baikal-Amur Mainline builders (1983). The ensemble was put on the top list of Perm "Student Spring" participants (1980). It was given the title of “People’s Ensemble” (1975), received prizes of Perm and VLKSM (All-Union Leninist Young Communist League) (1982), prizes of the Perm city in Art and Culture (2006).
“Solnechnaya Raduga” performs in lots concerts at regional, national and international levels. The geography of the tours is very extensive.
The ensemble was the prize-winner of the All-Russian Contest “Russian Student Spring” (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005), the winner of the All-Russian contest of Folklore Dance Ensembles (2003), the winner of the All-Russian Contest “Russian Student Spring” (2005), the Grand-Prix Winner of the All-Russian Russian Dance Festival for the prize of T.Ustinova (2007), and the diploma holder of the All-Russian Dance Festival for the prize of V.Zakharov (2008).
The ensemble participated in opening ceremonies of International Youth Sport Games of Russia, the CIS and Baltic states (2002) and the 1st summer “Russian Youth Spartakiad” (2006). It performed in the celebration of the 60th Victory anniversary in the Red Square in Moscow (2005) and the 65th Anniversary of Victory in the Battle of Stalingrad in Volgograd (2008).
The ensemble promotes the intangible Russian heritage by participating in CIOFF festivals. CIOFF is an international cultural non-governmental organization in formal consultative relations with UNESCO.
The ensemble has presented over 100 folklore and modern dances. The most spectacular of them are Russian folklore dances “Barynya-Sudarynya”, “Korobeiniki”, “Kalinka”, “Russian Beauties” (Female Round Dance), “Yablochko” (Russian Sailors’ Dance with tricks), “Mountain Ash”, “Romantic Date”, "On the Shore", “Village Gathering”, “The Dance of Skomorokhs”, “Victory”, “Spring, Hello!”, "Cossack Dance"; "Prokhodochka", "Dance with Handkerchiefs", "Dance with Accordions", and modern dances “Sirtaki”, “Our Yard”, “Flight”, “The Aegean Sea Rhythms”, “Cranes”, “Waltz...”, etc.
Thousands of people from different places could watch the ensemble’s performances. Solnechnaya Raduga had concerts in France (1992, 1994, 2004, 2005, 2007), Germany (1980, 1987), Turkey (1988, 1991, 1993), Spain (1989, 2010), Cuba (1978), Bulgaria (1985), Poland (1980, 1984, 2002), Czechoslovakia (1980, 1981, 2008), Laos (1982), Vietnam (1982, 1983), Finland (1981), the Ukraine (2001, 2002, 2003), Mongolia (1986), Portugal (2003), Greece (2006), Belgium (2008), and the Netherlands (2008). And, no doubt, it always enjoys performing in Russia and countries of the former Soviet Union.
The modern dance instructor is Natalia Arkhipova. The director of the school-studio is Yuri Nikolaev. The concertmaster of the ensemble is Oleg Noskov. The Director of the Russian folk instrument band is Evgeny Krylov.
